Playing Pet Gods
Eternal damnation or God given right?
Churches are the main custodians of Christianity and the ethics of their followers. The Christian custodianship view on nature is that human’s are the only creatures to possess souls and have control and dominion over nature. (Nash, 1898)
In Genesis, God commands humans; “be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” (Genesis 1-28)
However Christianity has contradictions. (Romans 8:19) “the lesser creatures await Christ's return to redeem the sons of God so they, too, will be released from physical death to eternal life.”
Therefore it is possible for pets to go to heaven. Pets are the object which Christians control nature as God intended. There is however a tension because pets are not a product of God, but rather modified by humans playing god.
Christians use faith to justify their dominance and control of nature for human needs. (Nash, 1989)
The wallpaper is a commentary on Christian pet owners beliefs or hopes that they can continue to control their pets in heaven.
Tis was a pitch for creating a brand identity for Nelson Mandela Children's hospital. I collaborated with Kyle Atcheson, Jessica Bemont, Lexy Dykhouse, Gregory King and Paul Masilela. We came second in the competition by a hair, but hey I think it is a winner.
